10.5 is obsolete and Apple doesn't carry those disks anymore or issues software updates for it.

If your iMac is a PPC G5 iMac (not a Intel processor Mac) then you will have to search online or on eBay etc for copies of the 10.5 install disks and they will want a lot of money.

If your Mac is a Intel processor Mac, then simply call Apple for 10.6 white Snow Leopard upgrade disks, then since you don't have a backup of your data off the machine, you need to do this first.

Once your files are off the machine (Pictures, Documents, Movies etc), then you can upgrade 10.6 over 10.5 merly by sticking the disk into the machine and running the upgrade installer

However it might not work and you will have to erase and install which is why you will need your users files first on a disconnected external drive. (above link)

Erasing and installing will wipe off everything, but it fixes issues and gives a faster machine, you won't have your iLife suite (iPhoto etc) but the files are in your Pictures folder which if you use AppStore (use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and it will appear under the Apple menu) you buy and reinstall iLife programs for a fee (you lost your 10.5 disk that had the free copies of iLife)

Once iLife is reinstalled your iphoto's etc will work, or else you can right click on the iPhoto Library and 'Show Package Contents' and inside is a folder called 'Originals' and use another program with your photo's etc.

With 10.6 freshly installed, you will need new 10.6 versions of your software of course, however if you can manage to upgrade 10.6 over 10.5, then the old programs tag along, but may need a update to work with 10.6.

If you go further to 10.7 or 10.8, your oler PPC based apps/games will no longer work, I don't advise going any further than 10.6.8 on a older machine like yours, it's just too slow and problematic for 10.7/10.8

Just use 10.6.8 until the machine fails and then look into getting a new one.

Buy Mac Os X 10.5

If this is all too much for you, there are local PC/Mac software places that will do as you ask, make a backup of files and then install OS X 10.6 for you for a fee of course. Apple won't do data recovery and they might not install 10.6, forcing you to use slow 10.8/10.7 or try to get you to buy a new machine prematurely.
